Concrete pavers, clay pavers or natural stone? A guide for your paving
The three material families side by side: look, maintenance and price — and why the laying pattern matters as much as the stone itself.
The first choice is the material family. Concrete pavers and tiles are the cheapest, dimensionally stable and available in every size and colour — the no-nonsense choice for a driveway or back path. Clay pavers are made of fired clay: their colour runs all the way through and only gets better with the years, which makes them the favourite for characterful work on front gardens and entrances. Natural stone and ceramic tiles are the sleek, premium option for the patio — every stone is slightly different, and that is exactly the charm.
That translates directly into price: standard paving runs € 40 to € 100 per m² all-in, with concrete at the bottom of the band and clay pavers and natural stone at the top. Choose pattern work — herringbone or elbow bond, soldier courses, borders — and you are in decorative paving territory: € 60 to € 120 per m² all-in, because patterns demand more cutting and fitting.
Look beyond the brochure: a dark stone shows efflorescence and sand faster than a nuanced shade, smooth tiles can be slippery in frost, and a large ceramic tile demands a more precisely laid sand bed than a paver. And the bond does more than you think — the same paver looks completely different in stretcher bond than in herringbone, and a driveway needs a bond that can take the steering forces of a car.
The smartest route: pick two or three candidate materials first, then request quotes and let each contractor advise on stone and bond for your situation. That way you compare not just prices — set them against the price index — but craftsmanship too: whoever asks good questions about ground and use is usually also the one who will lay it well.
